Restaurants, Organization, & Churches Invited to Participate in the Taste of Appalachia
Restaurants, organizations, and churches are invited to participate at the Taste of Appalachia. As one of several events planned for the Appalachian Festival, Taste of Appalachian will be held on Saturday, August 27th from 6:00pm - 9:00pm in Uptown Beckley. The festive block party will offer something for everyone with a variety of food and entertainment. This year’s entertainment includes the Three Degrees of Hair and the New River Jazz Band.
Also, special Ghost Tours will be offered – if interested in the walking ghost tour, you can make reservations by calling 304-256-TOUR.
Jill Moorefield of Beckley Renaissance says “This event is a great opportunity for local restaurants to promote their business, and it can also serve as a good fund-raiser for organizations and churches.” Vendors may set up booths along Main Street and Neville Streets and sell food samples. The event is intended to provide attendees an opportunity to sample several dishes, so vendors are encouraged to price individual items under $3.00 and sampler platters at $5.00 or less.
A panel of celebrity judges and the public can vote for their favorites. If judged as the best in any of the categories, the entry will receive a certificate to display. Celebrity judges will vote for individual categories including best appetizer, entree’, sandwich, dessert, and most attractive booth. The public can vote for the Peoples’ Choice Booth.
Vendors must follow all health department requirements and be registered by August 10th. To receive a registration form, call 304-256-1776 or visit http://www.beckley.org/beckley_renaissance/taste_of_appalachia.html

2011 Appalachian Arts & Crafts Fair features Appalachian Treasurers Quilt Show "A Gaggle of Geese"
Needles are flying in preparation for the annual Appalachian Treasures Quilt Show, taking place Aug. 26-28.
The Appalachian Steering Committee is gearing up for this year’s show, which is going to be held at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center during the Appalachian Festival’s Arts and Crafts Fair.
The theme for the 2011 Appalachian Treasures Quilt Show is “Gaggle of Geese,” which spotlights the antique pattern, flying geese.
There will be four quilt shop vendors present with beautiful fabrics, all the "tools" quilters need and other quilt related items.
Demonstrations of various quilting techniques will be presented during the show. These on-going demonstrations by local quilters will spotlight various phases of quilting as well as many different techniques and tools used by today's quilters.
One local quilter, Joyce Cook, will have on display a group of miniature quilted wall hangings. She will also be demonstrating the construction technique she uses and will be available to answer quesitons.
In the center of the Convention Center, suspended from the ceiling, will be four quilts of honor on display. The quilts of honor will be chosen based on someone the committee would like to honor, or to show off exemplary quilters and past winners. The show generally has 75 to 100 entries.
Local area quilters are invited to enter their quilts in the show. For additional information, an application, or to register a quilt, Info is available at 304-253-7590.
